It's a linear route, and although the climb up to the Castle is a little steep in places, it is short and very manageable by all, on Sundays it is very popular with local families.
We set off from the road between Alaro and Orient, and climb gently through beautiful olive groves, which line one edge of the Orient valley. Our narrow path, then begins to wind through holm oak woods to join the ancient cobbled path up to the ruined Castle. Winding steps lead us up into the imposing entrance of the Castle, where we stop to explore the ruins and enjoy the panoramic views towards Palma and majestic Mountain peaks. It is at this point that we realise just why this spot has been so significant in the island's history!
The continuation of our route now zigzags gently downhill through more holm oak woods until we reach Es Verger restaurant, after it is just a short meander down a wide track through olive and almond terraces (the access "road" to the restaurant) into the village of Alaro, where we take a taxi back to the car.
